Materials & Care

Most Ella & Hazel pieces are 3D printed in small batches here in Christchurch, then finished by hand. Here's what they're made from and how to keep them looking lovely for years.

What they're made from

Unless a product says otherwise, our pieces are printed in PLA, a plastic made from plant-based materials such as corn starch. It holds fine detail beautifully and comes in soft, matte colours that suit calm spaces.

Why no two are quite the same

Each piece is printed layer by layer, so you may notice fine layer lines, small texture changes or tiny marks where the print was finished by hand. These are part of its character, not faults.

Everyday care

  • Dusting: a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush gets into textured areas nicely.
  • Cleaning: wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry. Avoid harsh cleaners, solvents and soaking.
  • Not dishwasher safe.

Keep away from heat

PLA can soften and lose its shape in high temperatures. Keep pieces away from heaters, fireplaces, ovens, hot sunny windowsills and parked cars.

Water and food

  • Our pieces aren't watertight. For fresh flowers, place a glass or waterproof insert inside vases.
  • They aren't food safe, so please don't use them for serving or storing food.

Candles and lights

Pieces made to glow, like the Starlight Tree, are for LED tealights only. Never use a real candle or open flame.

Little ones and pets

Our pieces are decorations, not toys, and aren't suitable for young children. Some have small or fine parts that could break off.

Storing your Christmas pieces

Pack them away somewhere cool and dry, ideally wrapped in tissue in a box, rather than in a hot garage or ceiling space over summer.
